Antique rug care in Hampstead, Belsize Park and Highgate
Understanding an inherited work
A rug may arrive with a family story, an old receipt or little information at all. Keep those records together and, where possible, note what is known separately from what has been assumed. Appearance alone rarely establishes a precise age, origin or value.
During an agreed home assessment, H. Behnam examines craftsmanship, foundation, pile and signs of previous intervention. He can discuss likely weaving traditions and historical context where the evidence supports it. The purpose is to establish appropriate preservation, with uncertainty explained clearly.
Preserve character when considering restoration
Evidence of age does not automatically call for extensive work. A weakened end may need stabilisation, while sound areas can remain undisturbed. The extent of restoration should reflect the construction, condition and intended use of the piece.
Our assessment and care process explains how proposed work is discussed. Oriental Rug Services Ltd brings 37 years of expertise and third-generation family knowledge to that judgement. If documentation is needed for insurance, discuss a separate insurance replacement valuation.
Before an assessment
Should an inherited rug be cleaned before it is assessed?
Discuss its condition first. Earlier repairs, fragile foundations and uncertain dyes may affect the appropriate method and the sequence of any work.
Does a family story establish provenance?
It is useful context, but it is not the same as documented provenance. Keep supporting records and ask which conclusions can reasonably be drawn from the evidence.
