Rug conservation in Notting Hill, Holland Park and Bayswater
Read construction before choosing a treatment
Similar-looking rugs can have different foundations, fibres, dyes and previous repairs. Those differences matter when deciding how to clean or restore them. A design resemblance alone is not a sufficient basis for choosing treatment or assigning a firm origin.
H. Behnam personally undertakes agreed home assessments. He explains relevant craftsmanship and likely weaving traditions, placing a piece in historical context only where the available evidence supports that interpretation. His advice draws on 37 years of expertise and third-generation family knowledge.
Retain the work’s original character
An uneven colour or an old repair may be part of a longer history. The question is whether it represents instability, an earlier intervention or a characteristic that can reasonably remain. Restoration decisions should separate necessary structural work from a wish for visual uniformity.
For cleaning, the method must suit the materials and condition. Read about our specialist cleaning approach and the assessment process before discussing your piece. Our work photographs provide genuine examples of reconstruction without implying a particular local commission.
Before an assessment
Does fading mean a piece needs recolouring?
No. First establish what caused the variation and whether intervention is appropriate. Any proposed colour work needs careful examination and realistic expectations.
Should every old repair be replaced?
Not automatically. Its stability, materials and effect on the original construction should be examined before deciding whether further work is justified.
