Trust the Tiger: Why Expertise Matters

A valuable rug can spend generations in a family without needing much more than thoughtful care. When something does go wrong, however, the choice of whom to consult matters. The person examining the textile may be asked to distinguish old wear from new damage, recognise an earlier repair, identify a weaving tradition or recommend an intervention that cannot easily be reversed.

That is why specialist knowledge matters more than an impressive claim about cleaning power. Antique rugs are complex handmade objects. Wool and silk behave differently. Dyes may be stable under one condition and vulnerable under another. A repair that looks neat from the front may tell a different story when examined from the reverse. The right decision depends on understanding construction, history and condition together.

International conservation guidance makes this clear. The Canadian Conservation Institute stresses that historic textiles are vulnerable to light, moisture, pests and poor handling. It also warns that wet cleaning is irreversible and requires careful colourfastness assessment. Such guidance suggests a sensible professional sequence: examine first, identify risks, explain options and choose the least intrusive effective response.

Expertise is not merely the ability to perform intricate repair. It includes the judgement not to intervene. A worn area may have historic significance. An old restoration may be stable enough to retain. A colour variation may be original to the weave. A specialist should be able to explain why action is needed, or why it would be better to leave the piece undisturbed.

Oriental Rug Services Ltd is a third-generation family firm whose work is rooted in the knowledge of H. Behnam, a recognised authority on Persian and antique rugs. Its practice is focused on specialist examination, cleaning, repair and restoration for important domestic and institutional textiles. Its heritage is relevant because familiarity with these works is earned over time, through repeated study of materials, patterns, construction and the consequences of earlier treatments.

Trust must also be practical. An owner should expect a clear account of condition, a reasoned proposal, appropriate care in collection and return, and documentation of significant work. Even where a treatment is technically possible, its cost and effect on originality should be considered against the owner's purpose. Preservation for future generations is a more demanding standard than an immediate visual transformation.

For the owner of a rare collector's piece, these questions may affect market confidence. For someone who has inherited a family rug, they may affect whether the next generation receives an intact and meaningful heirloom. In either case, the objective is not to make the textile appear recently manufactured. It is to protect what makes it worth keeping.

Trust is earned when advice is specific, records are clear and the owner understands both the benefits and limitations of treatment. A specialist should be willing to discuss uncertainty as openly as technical capability.

The tiger emblem represents a promise of measured professional care, not a substitute for examination or a guarantee of investment returns. Oriental Rug Services Ltd invites owners to begin with an informed conversation about their individual piece.
